Abstract

Regional and rural Australia has been neglected in the provision of adequate, sustainable and affordable educational facilities. This neglect has caused the migration of regional and rural residents to metropolitan areas, causing severe strain on already burdened facilities in metropolitan areas and leaving regional areas with a brutal shortage of skilled workers desperately needed to sustain the ever growing resources industry in regional Australia. Providing regional and rural residents with modern, sustainable and appropriate educational facilities will assist the transformation of these regions to have long-term occupying prospects.
The world has changed into a global village with the internet acting as a hub for (amongst others) job advertisements. A tool does not yet exist that can trawl the web to find real time trends in labour markets. This study will focus on developing a tool that analyses labour trends through mining the data found in the five main Australian job advertisement sites. The tool will have a two-fold function: to identify skill shortages and to identify emerging jobs. These occupations are collectively referred to as Occupations-in-Demand in this research. The intelligence obtained pertaining to Occupations-in-Demand will provide vital information that should be used to develop targeted learning material. This targeted learning material will address the critical issue of skill shortages in respective areas in Australia, and provide learning opportunities to obtain skills for emerging jobs.
